Last weekend, AMS made its way down to the October 2010 Texas Mile with the white AMS Alpha 9 GT-R and the AMS Drag EVO VIII. This was the third time attending the bi-annual festival – a standing mile event hosted the last week of March and October at the Goliad County Industrial Airpark, Texas.

The AMS Drag EVO VIII made its way back to the Mile with hopes of besting its 228mph pass from last March – this time, running on E98 and a host of improvements including a dry sump, a more efficient 42R-based turbo and forged steel connecting rods. The Drag EVO was running strong, but after a shakedown pass on Friday, driver Eric Jones was more concerned with the 30mph crosswind coming from the south and decided to call it the day for the drag car.

The wind proved itself to be the most difficult adversary for the Drag EVO and for any other vehicle deploying a race chute throughout the weekend. After a Lamborghini Gallardo suffered a horrific crash early Saturday due to its chute catching a crosswind, the wait for more favorable conditions would have to continue.  Unfortunately, the crosswind remained constant all weekend and the Drag EVO would not make its way back to the tarmac for another pass.

The AMS team now focused attention on breaking the R35 GT-R standing mile record of 203mph with the white AMS GT-R.  This GT-R made its return equipped with the full Alpha 9 Package and forged engine internals; allowing it to run past redline in an effort to counter the GT-R’s limited stock gear ratio. With gusty winds blasting the GT-R from the 2 to 3 o’ clock position on Saturday, the best run taken by the GT-R for the day still fell short of the record.

The wind didn’t let up on Sunday and after missing the record by 2/10ths of a mph on the first run of the day, it was apparent that anything to improve the aerodynamics of the GT-R would be necessary to come out on top. After removing the wing, the AMS Alpha 9 GT-R was able to make an official run of 205.3mph! Not only did this mark the new standing mile record for the R35 GT-R, it’s now the highest velocity ever attained in one!

The next Texas Mile, Spring 2011

AMS plans to return to the Texas Mile in March 2011 with quite the motley crew of vehicles.  The AMS Drag EVO VIII will be back along with a few of our other high profile 1000+HP GT-R builds and the AMS Drag Hearse.
