Earlier this month, AMS sponsored driver, Dave Kern took home 1st place in the Unlimited AWD class at the 2012 Superlap Battle/Global Time Attack event with a 1:49.804. Entry into this event was a last minute decision on his part. It was also off the radar for most since Dave and his wife Allison are highly regarded as venerable hill climb competitors more accustomed to driving at higher elevations on both gravel and tarmac roads. In their other events, you would see the two flying up a dangerous mountainside together, but Dave flew solo this time in his first attempt around Buttonwillow Raceway. In fact, this was his first shot at a time attack competition in the EVO that didnÂ’t involve hill climb!
AMS would like to congratulate Dave for his achievement at this yearÂ’s Superlap Battle/ Global Time Attack. His time along with a 1st place AWD class finish and 3rd place overall is indicative of what an extremely skilled driver can do with very minimal track support and prep time amidst some well-funded race teams. Considering this was his debut at this event, we expect even more to come at the next SLB/GTA in addition to the rest of Dave and AllisonÂ’s 2013 season!

“David Kern lead all times in Unlimited AWD as his RaceKern.com Mitsubishi Evo won the class with a 1:49.804. The Unlimited AWD-winning RaceKern.com Evo is not a time attack car at all, but rather a Pikes Peak hill climb special. While the purpose of the RaceKern.com Evo will remain aimed at the Peak, Kern has promised to return to select time attack events with more “modular” modifications that will allow him to earn faster time attack times and the ability to transform back into a Peak attacker.
For a driver like Dave, countless adjustments and thoughts go through his head aside from driving itself. The prep work and struggle to make last minute changes in order to win are intense.
