For those of you that have been on this forum for years, you’ll likely recall the ‘life experiences’ that Marty and I have had during our attempts to compete in the SCCA National Championship Runoffs. We’ve had a zillion blown trailer and RV tires, wrecked race cars that we wrenched on for days just to turn laps, but in recent years Marty has been knocking down wins, Divisional Championships and last year was three laps from being the National Champion when literally the wheel fell off… no not the wheels, just the left rear wheel, hub, axle (part of it), caliper/rotor and other associated pieces. That has made the off season and even the races building up to this event all the more difficult to endure.
Marty has had a great season winning every event he entered and in one case even jumped in to an STO race to dominate the entire run group during a rain race (including GT-1 cars that see 185+ MPH in the dry).
So we made it to Road America with only one trailer tire as a casualty… it turned out to be a big PITA since it exploded and bent the steel rear under tray forward. Marty put the beat down on it with his baby sledge and slapped a new wheel on. After a few days of testing and suspension setup the car and Marty were ready for the first qual session on Monday.
Monday was a cool dry day in Elkhart Lake, WI and the qualification would be an important one to set the tone for the week. Marty had drawn a mid pack grid position so he would be mired in traffic trying to get a clean lap, but we were seasoned enough to pull off immediately and let everyone clear pit road before putting a gap in front and giving him room to go do his magic. The tech gods weren’t on our side as the SCCA live timing and scoring was down, so we had no idea what others were doing, but Marty knocked down a 2:30.4 lap which was .7 faster than his Pole run last year, so we were feeling good that we were in the ball park. After the session we checked the time sheets to see that Marty was on outside pole with a Solstice GXP, driven by Andy Wolverton on Pole by less than 5 hundredths of a second. Since my laptop battery is quickly draining and the Internet access is spotty, I’ll spare you the story of the next two quals only to say track conditions prevented anyone from improving their starting position.
We spent yesterday at AMS in Chicago with the boys going over the car to make sure everything was just right (Thanks to Eric J., Mark, Justin, Chris, Martin, Arne and the rest of the team for taking such good care of us and the car!!!)
So the field is set for the Saturday morning shootout here at Road America. Marty is up against some stiff competition as you can see, but we all know that he is up to the task.
